The Halladale River is a productive salmon fishery with a five year average catch of 759 salmon and grilse.

The fishable river is about 15 miles in length and flows through beautiful wilderness scenery into the Pentland Firth. It comprises 6 beats and over 50 named pools.

Fishing is usually let with one, or a combination, of three comfortably appointed cottages. Accommodation is also sometimes available at the magnificent Bighouse Lodge. There is excellent loch fishing for wild brown trout, a fine local 18 hole golf course and stunning sandy beaches for those who want to engage in other activities.

Bookings are usually made in November for the following season but it is always worth checking availability for cancellations.

    • • Beats and Fishing Times

The Lower River Halladale is divided into four beats which are clearly marked by the roadside (A897) and on the river map which should be carried by Fishermen at all times. The starting beat for fishing tenants will be allocated when lets are confirmed. Fishing tenants will move down one beat each day. Fishing is permitted from dawn until midnight. No fishing is allowed on Sundays.

The Gyrodactylus Declaration Form sent by the Administration Secretary must be signed by all fishers before staring to fish. All fishing equipment including boots and waders used outside the UK must be sterlized by one of the methods set out in the Form before starting to fish. The River Superintendent can give advice if necessary.

    3. Catches and Catch and Release Code

Salmon, grilse, sea trout and brown trout may be taken. To conserve salmon stocks fishermen are asked to adhere to the District Salmon Fisheries Boards’ catch and release code, details of which are available through the Administration Secretary and displayed in each fishing hut. Also displayed are the length to weight tables for estimating the weight of returned fish.
