So you are fishing a fast white water river in British Columbia enjoying the shade of a 90 foot Cottonwood tree – are you sure that it will stay upright after the beavers have done their work? Fond memories of BC in 2015.
After 5 months of feeling unwell and two hospitalisations, today, for the first time in 5 months I went fishing for 5 hours. I can tell you that this is the best remedial medicine ever invented. Wykeham Trout Lake gave me 20 reasons for feeling better ( All rainbow trout) caught on a Red Butt Black Hopper size 14. )
This Tyee ( King salmon over 30 lbs) was one of 4 that I caught whilst “cut plugging” on the Nitinat Narrows. This is where the Nitinat Lake flows into the Pacific and confines the salmon run to a channel of about 20 metres wide. It is the area on the map nearest the sea below the red marker shown. Fantastic, heart stopping experience. this is my guide and mentor, Kenzie Cuthbert holding my fish.
For the past 16 years I have fished Wykeham Trout Lake twice per week, but curtailed recently by a bout of bad health. At 83 coming up 84, I am very lucky so far. For the past 6 years I have visited British Columbia to fish at Cowichan River Wilderness Lodge for the various types of salmon ( depending on season) rainbow and brown trout but my obsession is for steelheads. All natural and wild fish. It is a long journey, 27 hours to the Lodge door and I am finding that very demanding. So this year I shall be trying Sweden. A Lodge called ” Nordic Footsteps”and like Vancouver Island – in the middle of nowhere. Has anyone any information on the area north of Mora perhaps?
