So you are fishing a fast white water river in British Columbia enjoying the shade of a 90 foot Cottonwood tree – are you sure that it will stay upright after the beavers have done their work? Fond memories of BC in 2015.

I had a “Bucket List” of places to go and fish to catch. I had an ambition to catch a freshwater bass and this one exceeded my wildest ambitions. It took a dry Caddis Fly and gave one very exciting fight on a Weight 6 rod and fly line. Thank you Kenzie Cuthbert – Expert Guide. August 2015.

After 5 months of feeling unwell and two hospitalisations, today, for the first time in 5 months I went fishing for 5 hours. I can tell you that this is the best remedial medicine ever invented. Wykeham Trout Lake gave me 20 reasons for feeling better ( All rainbow trout) caught on a Red Butt Black Hopper size 14. )

  1. Tight lines indeed, glad to hear you're feeling better, hope you get more hours on the lake!
  2. Thanks you Guys - really appreciate your comments.
  3. A PS. I was dreaming of Sweden and visit Nordic Footprints this year but ill health has made me rethink that hope. 84 years are beginning to take their toll!! But I'm still here. Hooray!!

First salmon.

  1. Oh nice, where are you going?
  2. The "best laid plans of mice and man ..." Sweden is "off" for a while due to ill health. SO disappointed.
  3. Oh hope you get better so you get the chance to come over!

As a new “member” I am so pleased to find new friends here – especially those from Sweden. I just love fishing, reading fishing, talking fishing. I am arranging to visit Nordic Footprints Lodge in July for 9 days fishing. Any information on the area will be very welcome.

  1. Stockholm is a stunning city especially in the summer. You may well see people out in the middle of the city in the water casting a line in search of Sea Trout and Baltic Salmon!
  2. That's my kind of city Mark! Really? That's amazing and says volumes for your clean environment. Couldn't do that in London.....
  3. Yes, I could hardly believe it myself. I was in town a couple of years ago and went to have look at the water. To my amazement there was a guy wading in the middle of quite a flow casting a double hander. They catch some incredible fish when the water flow is just right. There have been fish of over 40lbs taken right in the middle of the city. Some of the guys are slightly crazy too. Only last week a friend was wading in there amongst the moving icebergs.

The image on “my picture” is how my relatives see me.

Is there anyone with experience of fishing Northern Dalarna, Sweden? I am planning to go there in July for 2 weeks fly fishing. Any information would be welcome, please.

  2. You can check this place out, never been but supposed to be really nice!

This is a good example of my obsession – Steelhead ( Rainbow trout that run to sea) This is a summer specimen and was taken on a Muddler type fly (size 8) on the Nitinat River just before it flows into the Lake of that name.

  1. In paradise there Derek!
  2. That's how I've always felt about that place, Mark. Been going there for 6 years now but old age is beginning to tell on that long journey to get there. 27 hours from door here to Lodge door there is a real challenge to an old body!
  3. Derek thats one seriously long journey! I can understand you looking to fish nearer to home. I know northern Dalarna will not disappoint you, it's stunning. If you type Älvdalens Fiskecenter into the search you will see a great place run by great people. I am sure they will be very helpful on the area you will travel to in the summer. I will let you know when I find more on the area. If you will be driving from Stockholm to Northern Dalarna and fancy a stop over for the night, please let me know.

This Tyee ( King salmon over 30 lbs) was one of 4 that I caught whilst “cut plugging” on the Nitinat Narrows. This is where the Nitinat Lake flows into the Pacific and confines the salmon run to a channel of about 20 metres wide. It is the area on the map nearest the sea below the red marker shown. Fantastic, heart stopping experience. this is my guide and mentor, Kenzie Cuthbert holding my fish.

For the past 16 years I have fished Wykeham Trout Lake twice per week, but curtailed recently by a bout of bad health. At 83 coming up 84, I am very lucky so far. For the past 6 years I have visited British Columbia to fish at Cowichan River Wilderness Lodge for the various types of salmon ( depending on season) rainbow and brown trout but my obsession is for steelheads. All natural and wild fish. It is a long journey, 27 hours to the Lodge door and I am finding that very demanding. So this year I shall be trying Sweden. A Lodge called ” Nordic Footsteps”and like Vancouver Island – in the middle of nowhere. Has anyone any information on the area north of Mora perhaps?

  1. Hi Derek, I live in southern Dalarna and have also been eying up Nordic Footsteps. It looks fantastic and within casting distance from the lodge to the water. As Patric mentioned on one of your other posts Alvdalen is also a great spot and the guy running the place is very knowledgeable about that area and its fishing.
  2. All information gratefully received ready for my July visit. Many thanks Mark.
  3. Sorry for the delay in replying Mike Sanderson. Correct. Just off the A170 just west of Scarborough. Top quality trout in 7 acres of gin clear water. Bank and boat fishing. 20 rainbows to a dry Hopper yesterday 23/3/16 in just 5 hours fishing. Gave up when it became repetitive!
